Getting Started on Beamline 08ID-1

Safety in the Experimental Hutch

Certain safety mechanisms and restrictions are in place to reduce the likelihood of accidents while working in the experimental hutch.

Hutch Doors
  • The main door of the hutch is operated from the Main Door "open" and "close" buttons on the panel labelled "SOE-1" just outside the door of the experimental hutch. In case of an emergency the door can be stopped by pressing the large red "Door Stop" button, outlined below:

  • If you ever find yourself inside the hutch with the doors closed, push the button labelled "Emergency Beam Shut-Off" inside the hutch immediately next to the door. The door can be opened by pressing the green "Push To Exit" button.
Detector Safety
  • The detector should be moved before entering the hutch.
  • The motors controlling the detectors are fitted with a light curtain that, when tripped, will immediately stop the detector movement. In the event that the detector does not respond to commands to move, ensure that nothing is obstructing the light curtain. A light curtain override switch is provided in the event that something is obstructing the light curtain but the detector needs to be moved away in order to prevent damage or an accident.

Mounting Samples

Making room to safely mount samples

  • In the "Beamline Setup" tab of MXDC, simply click "Mounting Mode". This moves the detector and beam stop back to give you enough room to safely mount the sample without accidently hitting the detector.
Mounting samples
  • The Cryojet setup provides samples with a temperature range of 90 — 300°K. (The LN2 dewar supplying the Cryojet is filled automatically). Cryo-tools for handling samples are available on the shelves on the right side of the door.
  • Microscopes are available near the beamline and in the Sample Preparation Room. Beamline staff can move one to the table in the hutch, allowing easy mounting and direct flash cooling in the cold stream.
  • Rotate the protective cover over the sample camera and click "Retract" on the cryojet controller of MXDC. Place the sample pin on the goniometer and click "Restore" on the cryojet controller to restore the cryojet position. Refer to Data Collection for detailed instructions on centering the crystal in the beam.

Hutch Lockup Procedure

  • Before you can leave the experimental hutch, it is important to ensure that no tools or objects are left resting on or near the beamline itself.
  • Objects near the base of the detector or certain other locations may potentially interfere with the free movement of the motors.

Enclosure Search

  • Before locking up the hutch, two green Enclosure Search buttons must be pressed. This process is meant to ensure that the hutch is clear of people before it is closed.
  • Start from one end of the hutch by pressing the green Enclosure Search button located on the bottom of the grey boxes below the oxygen sensors. Sweep across the hutch and press the second Enclosure Search button located in the back corner of the hutch.

  • Once the hutch is secured and both buttons pressed, you may exit and close the hutch. On the SOE-1 Panel, located immediately beside the door on the exterior of the hutch, press and hold the Main Door "close" button until you can hear the buzzers sound inside.
  • To open the doors the green "open" button is used.

Opening the Photon Shutters

  • Before proceeding with data collection, the Endstation shutter will have to be opened by pressing the other green button on the SOE-1 panel so that all lights are green.
After an Injection
  • After an injection, the user will have to open a second shutter on the second panel, labelled POE-2.

  • After this shutter is opened, you will have to click "Restore Beam" in the "Beamline Setup" tab of MXDC.
