Procedures and Safety at the Beamlines
Beamtime shifts are normally allocated in 8 hour blocks starting at 08:00, 16:00 and 00:00. Note that this does not necessarily apply to Mail-In Crystallography.
User responsibilities
Users are responsible for the following:
- Understanding and complying with the policies regarding liquid nitrogen use. This includes, but is not limited to, wearing long pants, closed-toe shoes, safety glasses/mask and hand protection while working with liquid nitrogen and adhering to all applicable signage.
- Understanding and following all applicable safety protocols.
- Posting the proper safety protocols and signs required for their experiment.
- Ensuring experimenters working at a beamline have completed the Beamline Specific Orientation (BSO).
- Contacting CLS staff or the Floor Coordinator in case of a problem.
- Backing up data and completing on-site data processing before their run has ended.
- Cleaning up the beamline and lab areas before their run has ended.
- Reporting missing or broken equipment.
- Disposing of food related garbage in the appropriate garbage bin.
Users should not attempt:
- Making repairs or realigning beamline optics
- Removing covers or unplugging detectors or other electrical equipment
- Rebooting computers (unless instructed to do so).
- Using computer terminals not assigned to users.
Emergency Contact Information
- Floor Coordinator (3639) available whenever there is stored current and in most cases this should be your first call
- Control Room (3570)
- Emergency (9-911)
- University of Saskatchewan Security (9-966-5555)
- Beamline Personnel contact information is posted at the beamlines.
- CLSI HSE 24/7 On-call (9-227-3113)
- CLSI HSE Normal Business Hours (3663)
First Aid Kits, First Aid Supply Closets, Log Sheets
- First Aid kits are located around the CLS for use in minor first aid. Inside each kit is a standard assortment of supplies capable of handling a small incident. One example of a small incident is a small cut that requires a band aid. Even in this type of minor case a log sheet should be filled out as completely as possible.
- The log sheets are available in the first aid kits themselves. If additional supplies are required the first aid closets contain extras of all items included in the first aid kits. All incidents and uses of supplies should be recorded on the log sheets, regardless of severity.
Emergency Exits
- Emergency exits are located around the perimeter of the building. The nearest emergency exit for CMCF is via the south east stairwell. In the case of an emergency (i.e. Fire Alarm or other alarms) proceed through the exit via the south east stairwell and report to the front parking lot for further directions. Do not re-enter the facility until told that it is safe to do so.
- Familiarize yourself with the locations of emergency exits as well as other emergency supplies such as first aid kits, and fire extinguishers.
Safety Layouts of CLS Experimental Hall and Experimental Hall Around CMCF

Second Floor Mezzanine Fire Extinguishers

- In the map of the CLS Experimental Hall shown on the previous page, first aid kits, supply closets and emergency exits are highlighted. On the map of the CLS Experimental Hall around CMCF shown on the previous page closer attention is paid to the location of the nearest fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull stations and emergency exits in relation to CMCF.
- Keep in mind that in case of a fire, fire extinguishers are always located at waist height near the exit to a room or the building. The Fire extinguishers that we have at the CLS are BC and ABC type, BC is used for electrical fires and ABC can be used to fight almost all types of fires. If there is a fire that can not be put out immediately, calmly leave the building by the nearest exit pulling the fire alarm pull station on the way out. Finally, as is discussed under 'Evacuation Information', head towards the evacuation meeting location and await further instruction.
Beamline Health and Safety Information Center
- Each beamline at the CLS has a Health and Safety Information Center. These are posted on one of the walls near to the endstations. Information that must be available at this location can be put into four basic categories.
- Permit. Everyone who is operating a beamline is required to have a permit. The permit is organized through the Users Office and HSE. Without a permit, the floor coordinator or HSE personnel can stop work on a beamline.
- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). As with any scientific or industrial facility, are required to be available in the location of any chemical or otherwise applicable controlled substance are being stored or used. Any substances requiring an MSDS brought to the CLS by users, must come with the MSDS and be placed in the rooms where they will be used. On the beamlines the MSDS are stored at the Beamline Health and Safety Information Center. If these substances are being used in a wet/dry lab or other room in the building, a separate copy must of course be placed in the room’s specific MSDS center.
- Contact List. A list of important contact information such as the HSE on call person, the Floor Coordinator, the beamline personnel, the campus security, emergency response (Fire, Ambulance, and Police), is available at the beamline.
Safety Shower and Eyewash Stations
- Chemicals should be used in the shared wet labs on the main floor of the CLS. When entering a wet lab (Room 1080 for CMCF) the MSDS center is just outside the entrance to the lab. Just inside, users will find safety glasses available for use. These are required when chemicals are out. Just behind the door is a combination safety shower/eye wash station. For operation please read the instructions on site before beginning work.

Leaving the Beamline Unattended
- When leaving the beamline for more than 30 minutes we ask that you fill out a pink card and post it at the Health & Safety Information station (where your experimental permit and MSDS sheets are located). The beamline scientist will show you where the pink cards are located during your Beamline Specific Orientation. An example is shown below.

Evacuation Information
- The building must be evacuated in the event of a fire alarm or a verbal command from the Floor Coordinator or Emergency Response Personnel. Proceed in an orderly fashion to the closest safe exit route (at CMCF, this is via the southeast stairwell.) Take your jacket and/or personal belongings only if safe to do so. Proceed to the designated evacuation assembly area (CLS parking lot at the front of the building) and report to your beamline scientist or User Office personnel. During non-business hours, report to University of Saskatchewan security personnel.
- Hazardous wastes are collected in the laboratories and disposed through the U of S Waste Management Facility.
Follow the CLSI Hazardous Material Management Plan (No. 11.12.56.1) for the proper procedures.

CLS Hazardous Wastes Removal
- Hazardous wastes are collected in the laboratories and disposed through the U of S Waste Management Facility. Follow the CLSI Hazardous Material Management Plan (No. 11.12.56.1) for the proper procedures.
