08B1-1
The designation of the second CMCF beamline.  "B" refers to the bending manget source.

08ID-1
The designation of the first CMCF beamline.  "ID" refers to insertion device.

BM (Bending magnet)
The source of white beam X-rays on 08B1-1.  (The bending magnet produces lower intensity light compared to the SGU.)

BPM (Beam Position Monitor)
A component of the beamline hardware.

BSO (Beamline Specific Orientation)
This orientation is conducted by beamline staff and familiarizes users with the beamline they will be working on and its safety features. All users conducting an experiment on the beamline must have a valid BSO. This is separate from the general Safety Training.

CCG (Cold Cathode Gauge)
An instrument used to measure extremely low pressures (10-11 mbar to 10-3 mbar).

CMCF (Canadian Macromolecular Crystallography Facility)

Control room
The location from which the synchrotron itself is controlled.  The Control Room can be reached at extension 3570.

DCM (Double crystal monochromator)
Used to select a particular range of wavelengths from the white beam.  The 08ID-1 DCM is supplied by ACCEL; the 08B1-1 DCM is from Kozhu.

EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System)
From homepage: "EPICS is a set of Open Source software tools, libraries and applications developed collaboratively and used worldwide to create distributed soft real-time control systems for scientific instruments such as a particle accelerators, telescopes and other large scientific experiments."

EPS (Equipment Protection System)
A system that montiors the vacuum levels, water flow, LN2 levels, and other vital components in the beamline that could damage equipment in the event of a failure.

EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure)
A form of X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

FC (Floor Coordinator)
The Floor Coordinator principally verifies the usage permits posted at each beamline, can help answer general user concerns, and can be reached at extension 3639.

Front end (Front-end)
The part of a beamline between the primary optical enclosure and the storage ring, inaccessible to users.

GUI
Graphical User Interface.

ID (Insertion Device)
A component inserted into a synchrotron storage ring that allows for higher spectral brilliance than could otherwise be produced.  Insertion devices are classified as either wigglers or undulators.

Injection
The usually thrice-daily event during which the beamlines are shut down and the current in the storage ring is boosted.  The beamline safety shutters must be re-opened manually following injection.

IOC (Input/Output Controller)
An EPICS term for a computer that interfaces directly with beamline hardware.

LIMS
The CMCF Laboratory Information Management System.

LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen)
Liquid nitrogen.  Most crystal samples are kept at cryogenic temperatures through the use of liquid nitrogen.  A filling station for dispensing liquid nitrogen is located behind the 08ID-1 SOE.

MAD (Mutli-Wavelength Anomalous Dispersion)
A technique in X-ray crystallography that takes advantage of the anomalous dispersion of heavy atoms (often selenium) at different X-ray wavelengths in determining a molecular structure.

MarCCD
The X-ray detector used on 08ID-1 and 08B1-1.  Both will eventually use a MarMosaic CCD 300 model supplied by Rayonix.

MBT (Monochromatic Beam Transport)
On 08B1-1, a transport used to connect the POE to the SOE.  (On 08ID-1, the POE and SOE are adjacent.)

MIR (Multiple Isomorphous Replacement)
A technique in X-ray crystallography whereby heavy atoms are introduced into a molecular crystal.  The diffraction data from the heavy-atom derivatives can be used in conjunction with the data from the native form of the crystal to solve the molecular structure.

mrad (Milliradian)
A unit of angular measurement, equal to one thousandth of a radian.  (Not to be confused with "millirad", a somewhat antiquated measurement of absorbed radiation dosage.)

MX (Macromolecular Crystallography)
A more general shorthand than Protein Crystallography (PX) which includes other macromolecules such as nucleic acids.

MXDC (Macromolecular Crystallography Data Collector)
The in-house GUI program used to collect data at the CMCF. Also called Mx Data Collector.

NTFS (NT File System)
The standard format for hard drives under current versions of Windows.  NTFS-formatted hard drives are incompatible with the version of Linux used on 08ID-1 and 08B1-1.

OPI (Operator Interface)
An EPICS term for a computer from which beamline hardware can be controlled.

PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)
A component of the beamline instrumentation (typically of no direct concern to the end user).

POE (Optics Hutch)
Primary optical enclosure.  The POE contains various optical components such as the DCM that select a wavelength and guide it to the endstation.  Users are not to enter the POE.

PSH (Photon Shutter)
A shutter that prevents the X-ray beams from travelling to the endstation.  There are four shutters along the 08ID-1 beamline, as well as the final exposure shutter controlled by the data collection software.

PSS (Personnel Safety System)

PX (Protein Crystallography)
A shorthand abbreviation (derived in part from the "xtal" shorthand for crystal).

SAD (Single-wavelength anomalous dispersion)
A technique used in X-ray crystallography, related to MAD but only using a single wavelength of X-ray energy.

SGU (Small gap undulator)
The insertion device (ID) that is the source of white beam X-rays on 08ID-1.  (The SGU produces more intense X-rays than a bending magnet.)

SIRAS (Single isomorphous replacement with anomalous signal)
A technique in X-ray crystallography, using both isomorphous replacement (as in MIR) and anomalous dispersion (as in MAD and SAD) to solve a molecular structure.

SOE (Secondary optical enclosure)
On both 08ID-1 and 08B1-1, the SOE is principally the location of the endstation.

TCG (Thermal Capacitance Gauge)
A device used to measure very low pressures (1 mbar - 10-3 mbar).

TFM (Toroidal focusing mirror)
A component of the 08B1-1 optics.

Transport
A passive, radiation-shielded hollow pipe through which the X-ray beam passes from enclosure to enclosure.

ULE (Ultra Low Expansion)
A regustered trademark glass of Corning.

VCM (Vertical collimating mirror)
A component of the 08B1-1 optics.

VFM (Vertical focusing Mirror)
A component of the 08ID-1 optics.

VME
A computer I/O "crate" containing cards that interface with various systems.  (When it was first developed, VME was an abbreviation for "VERSAmodule Eurocard bus".)

WBS (White beam slits)
A component of the 08ID-1 and 08B1-1 optics.

WBT (White Beam Transport)
A transport used to convey light from the front end to the POE.

XANES (X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure)
A form of X-ray absoprtion spectroscopy.

XAS (X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy)
A form of spectroscopy in which materials are studied by examining the wavelengths of X-ray radiation that the material absorbs.  XAF can be divided into the two regions of XANES and EXAFS.

XRF (X-ray Fluorescence)
The characteristic X-rays emitted by a material following excitation by high-energy photons (such as X-ray radiation).
