Before You Arrive
Safety Training and Beamline Specific Orientation (BSO)
Safety Training and Beamline Specific Orientation (BSO), must be completed before you can work on a beamline. Please see the User Services Office website for information on registration and completing your Safety Training. You must ensure that all required training is up to date. Safety Training can be completed through the User Services Office online before you arive or on-site. Once training is complete, you must pick up your user badge and radiation monitor from the User Services Office (Room 2038). This will allow you access to the experimental floor. Note that the User Services Office is only open Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm (excluding holidays).
You should plan on arriving at the beamline approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of your scheduled shift. You will be met by one of the beamline staff who will complete the necessary BSO with you and review necessary information related to your experiment.
Where to Stay
One of the most convenient places to stay while visiting the CLS is the on-campus Lutheran Seminary Residence. Further information about the residence, including reservation information, and information regarding weekend arrivals is available here. Many other options are available. Contact the User Services Office for more information.
Pins
CMCF supports the Hampton CrystalCap Magnetic and CrystalCap Copper Magnetic pins. The 18 mm pin size is preferred and should be used. Hampton pins should be equipped with nylon cryo-loops which can be purchased through Hampton Research.
Other compatible Hampton-style pins can be purchased from vendors such Hampton Research, MiTeGen, or Crystal Positioning Systems. The pin height should be equivalent to the 18 mm pins described above. SPINE pins may be used when collecting data manually but will not be compatible with the future automated mounting system.

Return Shipping from the CLS
- CMCF staff will help with the return shipment for your dry shippers.
- Please complete the Shipping Order Form (also available at the beamlines) and leave it with beamline staff or with your dry shipper before you leave. The most important information required is:
- Your FedEx account number.
["CLSI Account #" field]
- Shipping speed. Overnight shipping is fast and recommended if you want to keep your crystals in good shape for future use. Ground/economy costs significantly less but may take a week or more so your crystals may not survive. Another option sometimes used is 2-day shipping which might be a good compromise.
["Date Required at Destination" field - if nothing is indicated, overnight will be assumed]
- The correct return address.
- Please allow sufficient time for outgoing shipments. Typically dewars are not sent out at the end of the week.
Shipping Dry Shippers from Outside Canada
- For shipping to and from the United States, the information for shipping within Canada applies.
- In addition:
- Complete a One Time Agency Agreement which should be available from the shipping company.
- Include a NAFTA Low Value Declaration Form which should be available from the shipping company.
- Include a Commercial Invoice.
- It is important that a reasonable value be declared for the dry shipper - usually around 200$ each.
- It is important to contact CLS Shipping and Receiving one week prior to arrival of your dry shipper from an international location. This is because they may be able to help deal with any issues that arise at Canada Customs. They can also help advise you concerning details of filling out the required documentation and current regulations. It is the responsibility of the user to keep track of the status of shipments.
- For shipping from outside Canada and the United States, please contact CLS Shipping and Receiving.
